Getting there and away
Centrally situated in the West Midlands of England, Birmingham is well connected to the rest of the United Kingdom by rail, bus, and air. The city has undergone a major transportation over the past couple of decades and has a tourist infrastructure that makes it an easy place to stay. As is the case with many destinations in England, it is prudent to compare prices on flights to London. Sometimes it is simply cheaper to fly to London and travel to Birmingham over land than it is to fly directly to Birmingham.
By Air
Birmingham Internal Airport (code BHX) is the sixth largest airport in England. It has direct flights from all over Europe as well as a few from Asia and North America. The airport is serviced by discount airlines including easyJet, Ryanair, and bmi baby. There are frequent flights between London and Birmingham, so you should be able to find a reasonably priced ticket if you do choose to fly to London first before arriving in Birmingham. The Birmingham airport is connected to the city center by a cheap and frequent train.
By Train
Not only is Birmingham’s New Street train station the center of rail travel in the region, but it is also the national center of England’s train system. As a result, you should be able to travel to Birmingham by rail from all corners of the country via BritRail. Be forewarned, however. Rail service in England is often expensive.
Two train stops in Birmingham serve Birmingham’s St. Andrews Ground – Birmingham New Street Station & Birmingham Moor Street Station (20 minutes walk). The nearest station is Bordesley, which is about a ten minute walk away from the ground, but is only served by trains from Birmingham Snow Hill and the service is not very frequent on Saturdays. If you arrive at New Street Station in the city center, either walk to Snow Hill (ten minutes) take a taxi (about £5) or embark on the 20 minute walk to the ground.
By Car
Leave the M6 at junction 6. Then take the A38 Aston Expressway, leave at the second exit and then at the roundabout take the first exit onto the A540 Dartmouth Middleway (signposted Bordesley). After 1.25 miles turn left into St Andrew’s Street.
Bus:
Birmingham is a transit hub and therefore is well serviced by buses from throughout the country. Local bus Lines 56, 57, 60, 96, & 97 (from the city center) takes you directly to St. Andrews Ground.
