Travel to Middlesbrough & the Riverside Stadium

Team: Middlesbrough
Location: Middlesbrough, England
Stadium: The Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough, TS3 6RS, Tel: 01642 877700

Getting there and away
Middlesbrough is located in northeast England in the Tees Valley in North Yorkshire. Compared to the Premier League teams in London, Manchester and Liverpool, it is a bit more difficult to travel to and to stay near The Riverside Stadium. Don’t let that discourage you, however. The city offers a unique charm and during sunny days it is one of the more pleasant cities to explore in all of England.

By Air
The nearest airport to Middlesbrough is the Durham Tees Valley Airport (Airport code MME), which is just a short bus ride (bus 20) from the center of the city. The airport is not large, but it is serviced by a number of discount airlines including Ryanair, BMI, and BMI Baby. This means that it can often be cheaper to fly to Middlesbrough from London, Manchester or Newcastle than to go by train or bus.

Another option is to fly to Manchester and take a train from the airport to Middlesbrough. This is fairly easy to do and might be worth the extra time because flights to Manchester are often less expensive than flights to other parts of the country. Manchester International Airport is the largest airport in England outside of London. SkyEurope, Jet2.com, Flybe and other budget airlines fly to Manchester from London and from destinations throughout Europe, making it one of the more affordable places to fly in England.

Airfare to Middlesbrough and Manchester will be the cheapest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday. Mondays are popular with business travelers and weekends are key dates for holidaymakers wanting the longest trips possible – avoid these dates. Consider traveling on a lesser-known carrier. British Airways is the national airline. However, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus and other airlines also stop in Manchester.

The most expensive air tickets to Middlesbrough and Manchester are found during peak holiday travel times, such as the summer Eurail season. Also be aware of national events or festivals, which can also cause ticket prices to rise.

You can also fly to Newcastle International Airport, which is also the home of many budget airlines. From there you can connect to Middlesbrough by train or bus.

By Train
Middlesbrough train services are operated by Northern Rail and Transpennine Express. Daily trains arrive from Manchester and Newcastle, as well as from smaller cities around England. You will want to book your train tickets to Middlesbrough well in advance, especially if you are traveling there on the day of a game.

Middlesbrough Station, the main train station in the city, is located on Albert Road, one mile (ten to 15 minutes walk) from Riverside Stadium. There is also bus and taxi service between the station and the stadium.

By Car

Bus:
Buses from Manchester and Newcastle arrive in Middlesbrough on a daily basis. If you are coming from out of town, your bus will arrive at Middlesbrough Station, right in the heart of the city. There are regular buses between Middlesbrough Station and Riverside Stadium. On days of games these can get crowded so give yourself plenty of travel time.
