Getting There & Away
Despite being a major port city for Tuscany, Livorno isn’t really thought of as a major tourist destination in Italy. Those who do venture to Livorno are rewarded with a lovely seaside setting and a pretty city center. It also makes a good home base for exploring more of Tuscany.
By Air
The closest airport to Livorno is Pisa’s Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA), which is just outside Pisa more or less to the north of Livorno’s city center. If you’re renting a car you can go directly from the airport and head south to Livorno – but if you’re on public transport you’re in luck, there’s a bus that connects the Pisa Airport directly to Livorno’s main train station (a journey of roughly 40 minutes). Alternately, Pisa’s airport has a train station less than 40 meters walk from the terminal. You may need to backtrack a bit and go into Pisa’s main train station in order to get a train south to Livorno, but that’s easy enough to do.
By Train
The main train station in Livorno is called Livorno Centrale, and it’s located to the east of the city center. It’s a big enough city that you shouldn’t have trouble finding a train to get you to Livorno – although depending on where you’re coming from you may have to change trains at a more major hub (such as Rome or Milan). This is especially true if you’re coming from further away than just Tuscany or Italy. As is the case with train stations all over Italy, Livorno Centrale is a hub for public transport in the city, including buses that will get you to Stadio Armando Picchi.
By Road
From Pisa’s Galileo Galilei Airport, you’ll want to make your way west on the Strada Grande Comunicazione Firenze-Pisa-Livorno until it intersects with the A12/E80 – onto which you’ll want to head south toward Viareggio/Roma/Genova/Livorno. As you near the outskirts of Livorno, this road turns into the SS1. The SS1 will take you around the eastern edge of Livorno, after which you’ll take the “Livorno Sud” exit onto Via de Levante (the SP5) going west. At the roundabout, continue more or less straight on Viale Giovanni Boccaccio, which then becomes Viale Nazario Sauro. Turn left onto Via dei Pensieri, and the stadium will be on your right.
