Getting There & Away
Lecce is a pretty busy resort town in Puglia, although the majority of the vacationers here are going to be other Italians rather than Americans. Lecce doesn’t have its own airport, but there are a couple airports close by to choose from - and getting from those to Lecce by train is easy.
By Air
Papola Casale Airport (BDS), also called Aeroporto Internazionale del Salento, is near the city of Brindisi in Puglia. It’s not a big airport, but it has regular flights on easyJet and Ryanair as well as Alitalia, Air One, MyAir, and Volareweb. From the Brindisi airport you can get a coach to the Lecce City Terminal (€5 per person, a 40-45 minute trip, but it only runs every couple of hours) or hop on the Air Shuttle minibus that’ll take you right to your hotel (about €15 per person). Brindisi is also about a half-hour from Lecce by train.
Bari International Airport (BRI), known also as Karol Wojtyla Airport and Palese Macchie Airport, is about 8km northwest of the nearby city of Bari, which is about two hours from Lecce by train. Bari gets regular flights from Alitalia, British Airways, easyJet, Eurofly, Ryanair, and TUIfly, among others. You can get a city bus into central Bari for less than €1 (the trip takes about 35-40 minutes & buses leave about once an hour) and then get a train to Lecce. Another cushier bus service goes directly to Bari’s Central Station in about a half-hour, and costs just over €4.
By Train
The main Lecce train station is about 1km from the city center, and there are regular incoming and outgoing trains to and from Rome, Naples, Milan and other major Italian cities. High-speed Eurostar trains serve Lecce from Bologna via Rimini and Bari. Keep in mind that if you’re coming from Rome or points further north, a train ride is likely to be an overnight deal.
By Road
From Piazza Sant’Oronzo in central Lecce, head east on Vicolo dei Mocenigo, take a right on Viale 25 Luglio, a left on Viale Guglielmo Marconi and then curve to the left as the street becomes Viale Felice Cavallotti. After you reach the park on your left, you’ll take a right onto Via Imperatore Adriano which angles slightly to the left to become Via del Mare. Continue on this road as it becomes Viale della Liberta, and you’ll eventually see the stadium on your left. You’ll take the exit for SP364/Viale dello Stadio. Parking areas are all around the stadium.
